SUMMARY:Sam Grisman Project
DESCRIPTION:Sam Grisman is a bass player\, music appreciator\, and bandleader who grew up in Mill Valley\, California in a home where some of the great acoustic music of our time was being recorded on a regular basis. His father\, legendary mandolinist\, composer\, and producer\, David Grisman\, was constantly having friends come over to his home studio for recording sessions and rehearsals. These friends\, such as Doc Watson\, Jerry Garcia\, John Hartford\, Mike Seeger\, and Tony Rice all left an impression on the younger Grisman and inspired him to pursue a life making music with his many talented friends. \n“They don’t just play this music. They live it. And they make you feel like you’re part of it too.” — No Depression \nSam Grisman Project was created to shed light on the music that Sam grew up around\, and highlight that music’s influence on the members of the collective and in the greater music community. The band’s shows create a safe space where the band and audience can bask in the shared love and reverence for the great music and musicians who continue to inspire us all. \nThe friends who make up Sam Grisman Project are a rotating cadre of acousticians who are some of the brightest individual voices on their respective instruments. Members of this rotating cast of instrumental wizards include guitarists Max Flansburg\, Logan Ledger\, Sam Leslie\, Henry Moser\, Jesse Harper\, and Jefferson Hamer\, mandolinists Dominick Leslie\, Joe K. Walsh\, Matt Flinner\, and Jesse Appelman\, clawhammer banjo maestro Victor Furtado\, fiddlers John Mailander\, Alex Hargreaves\, Nate Leath\, Shad Cobb\, and Phoebe Hunt\, cellist Nat Smith\, and Todd Livingston on the Dobro. \n“This isn’t nostalgia. It’s a living breathing celebration led by musicians who understand the soul of the music.” — Bluegrass Today \nThe band also frequently collaborates with legendary singer\, songwriter\, and bluegrass pioneer Peter Rowan\, a deeply meaningful connection for Sam and the band tying directly back to his father David Grisman and the Old and In the Way legacy. Over the years Sam Grisman Project has been joined by a wide range of spontaneous and exciting guests including David Grisman\, John Sebastian\, Tim O’Brien\, Billy Strings\, Maria Muldaur\, Margo Price\, and many more. \nThis ever evolving collective of exceptional humans who happen to be incredible musicians is a testament to the abundance of joy\, and wealth of experiences that growing up around this timeless music has brought into the younger Grisman’s life. Sam Grisman Project is committed to putting their love\, gratitude\, and individuality into the music that they share on stage each night\, and to participating in the community effort of preserving\, expanding\, and appreciating great American acoustic music. \n“One of the most joyful and reverent tributes to the Grateful Dawg legacy you’ll ever witness.” — Relix Magazine \nTo preserve the sonic integrity of their instruments and voices\, SGP plays acoustic music into condenser microphones. The sound on stage is fully acoustic and sensitive\, so we kindly ask that you save conversations for before and after the show or during the set break. Thanks for coming and thanks for listening. We hope you enjoy the music. \nCo-presented by Wheeler Associates & Wheeler Opera House

Albums he has produced have sold close to 100 million copies for a wide array of artists such as The Rolling Stones\, Bob Dylan\, Willie Nelson\, John Mayer\, Ringo Starr\, Wayne Shorter\, The B-52s\, and Charles Lloyd. In 1995\, he produced and directed the Brian Wilson documentary I Just Wasn’t Made For These Times\, which won the San Francisco Film Festival’s Golden Gate Award. As a film composer\, he received the 1994 British Academy Award (BAFTA) for Best Original Score for the film Backbeat. He also won the 2014 Emmy Award for Outstanding Music Direction for CBS’s The Beatles: The Night That Changed America. \nIn 2018\, Don joined Grateful Dead guitarist Bob Weir to form the Wolf Brothers\, a band that continues to tour in the U.S. and overseas. In April 2023\, he served as Music Director for Willie Nelson’s 90th birthday celebration at the Hollywood Bowl\, and he is featured in the Willie Nelson & Family documentary on Paramount+. In September 2024\, he was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Americana Music Foundation at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium. His work includes overseeing acclaimed vinyl reissue series such as Tone Poet and Classic Vinyl\, as well as signing and producing many of the label’s current artists\, including Robert Glasper\, Charles Lloyd\, Wayne Shorter\, Dr. Lonnie Smith\, Gregory Porter\, and Jason Moran. \nDon’s deep Detroit roots keep him closely tied to the city. For the past 15 years\, he has music-directed and played bass in the Don Was Detroit All-Star Revue\, part of Detroit’s annual diversity festival\, the Concert of Colors. From 2009 to 2012\, he hosted The Motor City Hayride on SiriusXM’s Outlaw Country channel\, and since 2021 he has co-hosted The Don Was Motor City Playlist\, a live weekly show on Detroit’s NPR station WDET-FM. Don is also the voice of Neville the Dog in the hit Amazon Prime Video children’s series Pete the Cat. \nTHE PAN-DETROIT ENSEMBLE\nDon Was’ latest group\, The Pan-Detroit Ensemble\, features top-tier jazz musicians from his hometown. “There’s a unique sound and feel to Detroit that permeates the music in a way that resonates all over the globe\,” says Was. “There’s a rawness\, a lack of pretension\, and an unmistakable underlying groove that reflects the people and culture of the entire city.” \nThe band includes longtime collaborators such as Blue Note artist Dave McMurray on saxophone and Eminem’s Oscar-winning collaborator\, keyboardist Luis Resto. Additional members include trombonist Vincent Chandler\, trumpeter John Douglas\, drummer Jeff Canaday\, percussionist Mahindi Masai\, guitarist Wayne Gerard\, and vocalist Steffanie Christi’an. \n“When the opportunity came to put together a new band\, the message was clear: go back to Detroit where I came from\, be who I am\, play like who I am\, and team up with like-minded individuals\,” says Was. \nThe Pan-Detroit Ensemble debuted in 2024 and 2025 and will continue touring the U.S. and select international markets in support of their forthcoming debut album\, Groove in the Face of Adversity\, to be released October 10 on Mack Avenue Music.
