SUMMARY:Aspen Historical Society Presents: Chris Anthony's Friedl
DESCRIPTION:Aspen Historical Society welcomes professional skier and documentary filmmaker Chris Anthony back to the Wheeler Opera House for the Aspen premiere of Friedl\, Anthony’s latest film exploring the legendary life of one of Aspen’s most influential ski pioneers\, Friedl Pfeifer. While researching a sequel to his award-winning documentary\, Mission Mt. Mangart\, Chris uncovered the remarkable story of a daring ski race on Austria’s highest peak\, the Grossglockner\, which required athletes to climb to the summit starting in the middle of the night. Austrians held the race beginning in 1935\, initially on wooden skis with leather boots and bindings\, descending the glacier below to avoid crevasses\, rocks\, and cliffs rather than using gates. In 1935\, the fastest skier from the summit was Friedl Pfefier\, who also won a shorter version of the race in 1936. Chris quickly realized this was the same Friedl Pfeifer whose statue stands at the base of Ajax: Pfeifer escaped the Nazi regime\, immigrated to the United States\, led the Sun Valley Ski School\, served in the 10th Mountain Division\, and later helped create Aspen Skiing Corporation. The film explores this sweeping story\, followed by a conversation with Colorado Snow Sports Hall of Fame inductee Chris Anthony. Photo: Friedl Pfeifer circa 1950. SUMMARY:Recovery Resources presents We Can Be Heroes - A Social Impact Documentary Film
DESCRIPTION:Recovery Resources and Under the Hood Productions are excited to present WE CAN BE HEROES\, a powerful documentary film that shines a light on the complexities of addiction and the strength of the human spirit. WE CAN BE HEROES follows Detroit boxer Taylor “Machine Gun” Duerr in the fight of his life – both inside and outside the ring – training for the WBAC Cruiserweight title and battling the demons of drug addiction. \n“I’ve already been dead\, what are you gonna do to me?” -Taylor Duerr \nWE CAN BE HEROES is a social impact film screening that will launch community discussion around the complexities of drug and alcohol addiction – a topic that’s deeply relevant in our mountain resort towns. The film’s mission is to replace stigma with understanding and compassion for those who are battling the daily challenges of addiction. We’ll host a talk-back session with Taylor following the film\, giving the audience a chance to ask questions and learn about Taylor’s lived experience as both an athlete and addict. Film-goers will walk away with a better understanding of substance use disorder\, how it affects our community\, and what can be done to battle this insidious disease. \n“Until the stigma of addiction is removed those who need help are less likely to seek it…and those who can help are less able to offer it.”

DESCRIPTION:PROGRAM  1\nLakota Nation vs. United States chronicles the Lakota Indians’ quest to reclaim the Black Hills\, sacred land that was stolen in violation of treaty agreements. A searing\, timely portrait of resistance\, the film explores the ways America has ignored its debt to Indigenous communities\, and ponders what might be done today to repair the wrongs of the past. \nThe Shining Mountains Film Festival was started in 2019 to commemorate the 1st anniversary of the City of Aspen passing a resolution removing the celebration of Columbus Day and replacing it with Indigenous Peoples’ Day. \nThe purpose was: through films/documentaries produced\, and directed\, stories told by Native Americans – First Nations’ voices\, we would provide a platform to educate non-Indian communities about the true history\, genocide\, challenges\, and struggles as well as sharing the rich Native culture\, talents\, wisdom and traditional ways. Thus\, breaking the stereotypes\, and shining light on the reality of what has been done to the Indigenous Peoples since colonization\, the ongoing racism\, and systemic injustice.  In recognizing all the talents\, and positive and unique impacts that the Indigenous Peoples contribute to the world\, showing that a strong spiritual connection with Mother Earth and all beings leads to a balanced and harmonious world. Shining Mountains Film Festival showcases feature films and documentaries as well as shorts for two days at the iconic Wheeler Opera House in the heart of Aspen. \nThe festival opens with a Blessing Prayer by a Ute tribe member. We aim to bring as many film directors\, producers and talent for live Q & A after each screening. There is also a live dance performance exhibition and genuine Native art for sale in the lobby area. This is an award film festival with Best Long\, Best Short and Audience choice. \nPresented by the Aspen Indigenous Foundation

SUMMARY:5Point Summer Film Series Presents: FULL CIRCLE - A Story of Post Traumatic Growth
DESCRIPTION:Roaring Fork Valley Premiere screening of FULL CIRCLE\, a story of post-traumatic growth with Trevor Kennison and Barry Corbet. FULL CIRCLE follows Trevor on a path toward post-traumatic growth in parallel with Barry\, 50 years later.  Their stories mirror each other\, connected through time and space by common locations and motifs; injuries in the Colorado backcountry\, rehab at Craig Hospital\, fame in Jackson Hole; but also through their shared resiliency and refusal to let their zeal for life be limited by their injuries.  Barry shows that growth after spinal cord injury is possible for everyone\, not just adaptive athletes.  And yet his legacy paves the way for Trevor’s superhuman feats.  Six years after his accident\, Trevor returns to the site of his accident in the Colorado backcountry with the goal of landing the world’s first double backflip on a sit-ski- the culmination of his own personal growth and reinvention.
