SUMMARY:Ronan Donovan: Exploring our Wild Nature: Wolves\, Chimps & Gorillas
DESCRIPTION:Wolf-Whisperer. Wildlife Biologist. Natural History Filmmaker. \nWhat does it mean to be human? We are\, at our core\, social mammals. We build relationships\, communicate\, reproduce\, establish territories\, and adapt to shrinking resources. In these ways\, we’re no different from other social mammals. Chimpanzees\, wolves\, and gorillas are among the most charismatic mammals we know. We identify with them as species\, groups\, and even as named individuals. All social mammals live in groups to achieve together what they cannot do alone. Join biologist-turned-photographer Ronan Donovan as he shares what he’s learned documenting these animals\, and the insights he believes we—as fellow social mammals—can learn from our wild kin. \nNational Geographic Explorer Ronan Donovan is a wildlife biologist turned conservation photographer. He uses visual storytelling to illuminate stories related to our fellow social mammals to remind us that we are all connected and to promote the preservation of our shared habitat. Ronan has embedded for months at a time\, year after year\, with wild families of wolves\, chimpanzees\, and mountain gorillas to capture imagery that highlights their challenges\, behaviors\, and family bonds. His time in the field has resulted in five National Geographic magazine feature stories on the conservation status of these species. You can watch Ronan in action in Kingdom of the White Wolf (Disney+) and in Planet Earth 3 (Amazon Prime). His first photo exhibition\, titled Wolves\, will be traveling for the next 3 years. \nPresented in Association with Aspen Center for Environmental Studies \n \nPhoto by Leigh Vogel

SUMMARY:Changemaker Speaker Series Bryan Smith: Capturing the Impossible
DESCRIPTION:A decade ago Bryan Smith bought his first camera at Walmart and started calling himself a filmmaker. Armed with a $500 handycam\, he embarked on a kayaking expedition to the far reaches of Arunachal Pradesh\, India. While his imagery barely cracked amateur status on that first expedition\, his passion and persistence would carry him through the ranks of the industry in the span of just 10 years. \nHis first film\, 49 Megawatts\, documented a community’s struggle with a hydroelectric project on British Columbia’s Ashlu River and eventually led him to the hallways of National Geographic. He received an Expedition Council grant to lead a team of kayakers into the wilds of the Kamchatka Peninsula in Russia and went on to direct The Man Who Can Fly for the National Geographic Channel. After several years as a freelance director of photography for National Geographic\, Bryan founded Reel Water Productions— boutique production company based in Squamish\, British Columbia\, specializing in documentary\, expedition\, and commercial content. \nBryan currently leads a team of like-minded creatives in the pursuit of authentic storytelling. Their award-winning films have graced festival circuits\, television networks\, and the online community. Bryan looks for projects that  pass a 60/40 rule *just 60% chance of success).  He believes that a high chance of failure produces the best work and creates unforgettable stories.

SUMMARY:Changemaker Speaker Series Gerlinde Kaltenbrunner: Defying Limits: Climbing the 14 Highest Peaks
DESCRIPTION:Gerlinde Kaltenbrunner’s interest in mountain climbing developed at a very young age. It was Reverend Dr. Erich Tischler\, a youth group leader in her hometown of Spital am Pyhrn\, Upper Austria\, who introduced her to the fascinating world of mountains. After the dominical church service\, he would take Gerlinde Kaltenbrunner along on numerous tours to the mountains surrounding her hometown. \nFor her first career\, Gerlinde worked as a nurse\, giving her unique insight into the human body and a better understanding of how to keep it at peak performance. She skied and climbed mountains in her spare time\, occasionally leading tours.  She always dreamed of climbing one of the world’s tallest mountains\, known as the 8\,000-meter peaks.  She achieved that dream at the age of 23\, when she reached the summit of Broad Peak in Pakistan (8\,027m).  That lit a fire inside of her. \nDuring the following years\, she poured all of her extra money from her nursing career into trekking and climbing expeditions to the Himalaya. She would climb four more peaks on her vacations from work.  After summitting the 5th 8\,000-meter peak\, Nanga Parbat (8\,126m)\, in Pakistan\, she decided to go for her dream to become a professional mountain climber. \nToday\, Gerlinde Kaltenbrunner has climbed all fourteen main peaks in the eight thousand series as well as two fore summits higher than eight thousand meters. By reaching the summit of K2 (8\,611m)\, the second highest—and considered by many to be the most dangerous—peak in the world\, she became the first woman to scale all 8\,000m peaks without the use of supplementary oxygen or the help of high-altitude porters. \nPresented in association with Aspen Center for Environmental Studies

SUMMARY:ACES and The Nature Conservancy Presents Witness to Water: A photographer’s lifelong journey
DESCRIPTION:Witness to Water follows the Colorado River from its pristine headwaters in the Rocky Mountains to its altered and endangered end in the Sonoran Desert. In this immersive multimedia presentation and book launch celebration\, acclaimed National Geographic photographer and filmmaker Pete McBride shares images\, videos\, and sound from decades spent documenting the river from source to sea—or dry delta—and its many tributaries\, from the Roaring Fork to the Gila and beyond. \nThrough travel by packraft\, on foot\, and from the air\, McBride bears witness to both the river’s extraordinary beauty and the immense pressures placed upon it. The program features brand-new work from recent visits to emerging conservation pockets in the Colorado River Delta and newly revealed slot canyons in Lake Powell\, landscapes hidden underwater for a lifetime\, alongside Indigenous and local perspectives that deepen the story. \nA Roaring Fork Valley native\, McBride brings a deeply personal lens to this presentation\, weaving together his films\, assignments\, and books into a comprehensive\, engaging\, and hopeful portrait. Both an elegy and a call to action\, Witness to Water is an unforgettable exploration of a river in peril—and a reminder of what is at stake for the wild watersheds that sustain us all. \nA Q&A and book signing will take place at the end of the event.

SUMMARY:Changemaker Speaker Series Jean Fruth: Inside America's Favorite Pastime
DESCRIPTION:Jean Fruth’s trajectory as one of baseball’s preeminent photographers has taken her on a round-the-horn tour of the sport’s most indelible landmarks. Growing up in New York City\, Jean’s earliest memories are of her Grandfather listening to his beloved New York Mets on a tiny transistor radio. In school\, Jean fell in love with the alchemy of photography. When she moved west as a young adult she immersed herself in the business\, becoming a portrait photographer in the wine country of California. When life got busy and she found herself spending hours at the field of her son’s Little League games\, she started shooting the action\, eventually submitting images to the local paper. That’s when the local editor spotted her keen eye for sports photography and invited her to submit more. Jean tried her hand at different sports but found that nothing compared to the art and poetry of baseball. To outsiders\, it’s a slow-moving sport; to aficionados\, it’s an orchestra of strategy\, timing\, and sheer athleticism. \nThrough her journey\, Jean has recognized the transformative power of baseball to help young people develop strength\, skills\, friendships\, and to learn and practice the concept of teamwork. As a result\, together with her partner\, former Hall of Fame President Jeff Idelson\, she formed a non-profit organization called Grassroots Baseball\, to promote and celebrate the amateur game around the globe\, with a focus on encouraging interest and participation at the youngest levels. She is documenting their journey in a series of books\, starting with Grassroots Baseball: Where Legends Begin (Simon & Schuster\, 2019) with an introduction by Cal Ripken\, Jr.\, and an afterword by Johnny Bench.

SUMMARY:Proactive & Prepared: Wildfire in the Roaring Fork Valley
DESCRIPTION:Wheeler Opera House is pleased to partner with the Wildfire Collaborative Roaring Fork Valley\, Aspen Public Radio and ACES on an event designed to increase awareness and preparedness as wildfire season approaches. \nColorado is experiencing its warmest year in 131 years of record\, and one of its driest. The Roaring Fork Valley sits at the epicenter\, among the hardest-hit areas in the state for severe drought. With snowpack now peaked at historic lows\, climate scientists are drawing comparisons to years that defined what catastrophic wildfire looks like in Colorado. This spring\, wildfire risk across our valley is as serious as it has ever been. \nOn Thursday June 4\, the Wheeler is partnering with the Wildfire Collaborative Roaring Fork Valley\, Aspen Public Radio\, and ACES to bring our community together for a direct conversation about what these conditions mean for our valley\, what local fire departments and researchers are doing about it\, and what each of us can do to protect our homes and our neighbors. \nWe’ll start the presentation at 6pm sharp\, with opportunities for attendees to connect to presenters and panelists in the lobby both before and after the event. \nIf you’ve been wondering where things actually stand\, this is the event to attend. \nUtilizing Wildfire Collaborative Roaring Fork Valley’s boots-on-the-ground expertise\, Aspen Public Radio’s journalistic prowess\, and ACES’ decades of environmental experience\, an informative evening will review this season’s wildfire outlook\, new predictive technologies and resilience increasing efforts in our region. \nThe evening is organized around three questions:\nWhat are we facing this season?\nWhat is being done about it?\nWhat happens when fire comes? \nDrawing on the Wildfire Collaborative Roaring Fork Valley’s work in fire behavior modeling and fuels mitigation\, Aspen Public Radio’s deep ties to this community\, and ACES knowledge of historic environmental science\, the program brings together the people best positioned to answer those questions — climate scientists\, local fire chiefs\, researchers\, and emergency response leaders — in one room\, for one conversation.
