SUMMARY:Manual Cinema's "The 4th Witch"
DESCRIPTION:Manual Cinema’s The 4th Witch is a vivid new work inspired by elements of Shakespeare’s Macbeth\, following a young girl who escapes an approaching army and disappears into a dark forest. Orphaned and exiled\, she is taken in by a witch who becomes both guardian and mentor. As the girl grows in power\, so does her resolve to confront the warlord responsible for the violence that reshaped her world. Told entirely without dialogue through shadow puppetry\, live silhouettes\, and an original score\, the production mixes cinematic craft and theatrical invention with striking emotional clarity. \nThe piece examines grief\, war\, generational conflict\, and how cycles of violence endure long after the battlefield is quiet. Through handcrafted imagery and Manual Cinema’s signature visual language\, the work reframes Macbeth from the perspective of the unseen and the displaced\, illuminating the quieter stories that linger in the margins of myth and history. \n“a dark work\, full of pain and loss\, but the darkness lifts”\n– Laura Collins-Hughes\, New York Times \nThe 4th Witch premiered June 4–8 2025 at the Spoleto Festival USA in Charleston\, SC and was co-commissioned by Spoleto Festival\, CalPerformances\, Arts Emerson and Wisconsin Union Theater.\nManual Cinema is an Emmy Award-winning performance collective\, design studio\, and film/video production company founded in 2010 by Drew Dir\, Sarah Fornace\, Ben Kauffman\, Julia Miller\, and Kyle Vegter. Manual Cinema combines handmade shadow puppetry\, cinematic techniques\, and innovative sound and music to create immersive stories for stage and screen.

SUMMARY:Shining Mountains Film Festival 2026
DESCRIPTION:Nicholas Black Elk – 26mn \nThe Oglala Lakota chief\, Black Elk\, stands as one of the most revered Native American figures in history. Healer\, shaman\, and Catholic spiritual leader\, Nicholas Black Elk was a bridge between two seemingly radically opposed worlds \nChildren Of The Mountains – 7 min 42 sec \nThe artistic vision behind Children of the Mountain explores the sacred Indigenous tradition of the sweat lodge. With the permission of Ron Six Bears Alec\, this short film seeks to capture the essence of this spiritual experience\, preserve it and carry forward one of the most spiritually healing practices of the Indigenous communities—one that tribal disenrollment threatens but cannot strip away \nWe Are Still Here – 21 min 13 sec \nFor thousands of years\, the Timbisha Shoshone have survived the extremes of Death Valley. But their greatest battle wasn’t against the desert—it was against erasure. Through the undeniable history recounted by elders like Pauline and Joe Kennedy\, and the urgent\, present-day fight led by Jimmy-John\, this film explores the ongoing struggle for sovereignty\, transparency\, and the very survival of the community. The land has a spirit\, but protecting it requires a new generation to stand its ground. \nRun As One – 6 min \nErrol Ranville has been running all his life: from chronic poverty and racism in rural Manitoba; a discriminatory music business; alcohol and drug addiction; and the responsibilities that come with being regarded as a role model. Though Errol has faced seemingly insurmountable barriers as an Indigenous performer in a predominantly white music business\, his band C-Weed & the Weeds released several #1 songs and went on to score JUNO nominations in 1985 and 1986. Errol was the recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Indigenous Music Awards in 2011. Errol’s autobiography Run as One is filled with love and passion as he embraces the role of trailblazer for the countless musicians that follow his path. \nReservation Redemption – 60 min \nAt age 17\, Chief Marchand Rice received a life sentence without parole\, narrowly missing the death penalty by a single vote. Francis Cullooyah\, a Kalispel spiritual leader\, changed the Chief’s life trajectory by asking a simple question. “Who do you want to be when you grow up”? Realizing he had a choice despite the life sentence he was given. He changed a life without to a life within. He immersed himself in his Native Culture he had never known before and became a leader\, a teacher\, and a mentor for anyone who wanted to learn.

SUMMARY:In The Company of Wolves
DESCRIPTION:Following its premiere at Cannes\, screenings in New York and Los Angeles\, and sold-out shows in Montana\, In the Company of Wolves: An American Journey comes to Aspen for a special evening of film and live conversation. \nAcademy Award® winner Jeff Bridges narrates this visually stunning journey from the shores of England to the vast landscapes of the American West\, uncovering the deeper story beneath its enduring mythology of freedom\, rugged individualism\, and boundless possibility. Through wolves\, bison\, horses\, cattle\, sheep\, the film reveals how animals—wild and domesticated—helped shape our ideas\, folklore\, landscapes\, and sense of nationhood\, altering the course of American history as profoundly as any human hand. \nAs Jeff Bridges says\, “It reminds us that the wild and the domesticated have always reflected the deeper story of who we are as a nation — and who we might yet become.” \nAfter the film\, join filmmakers\, ranchers\, and conservation voices for a lively Q&A about one of the West’s most compelling questions: how can people\, working landscapes\, and wildlife thrive together? The conversation brings together perspectives too often placed in opposition—and invites the audience into the discussion. \nThe evening is sponsored by the Rangeland Foundation and moderated by longtime Aspen resident and American Renewable Energy Institute founder Chip Comins. \nFilm runtime: 82 minutes. Live Q&A immediately following. \nTicket sales support AREI/AREDAY\, a nonprofit dedicated to creating a sustainable future for all.

SUMMARY:An Evening with Tom Rush accompanied by Brendan Cleary
DESCRIPTION:Folk icon Tom Rush brings a night of songs and stories to the historic Wheeler Opera House. Known for a warm\, expressive voice\, distinctive guitar work\, and wry\, laugh‑out‑loud storytelling\, Rush moves effortlessly from tender ballads to gritty blues. \nA pivotal voice of the ’60s folk revival\, he later helped spark the acoustic renaissance of the ’80s and ’90s. James Taylor told Rolling Stone\, “Tom was not only one of my early heroes\, but also one of my main influences\,” and Garth Brooks has named Rush among his top five musical influences. \nHe’s also long championed emerging writers—his early recordings introduced audiences to Joni Mitchell and Jackson Browne—and his Club 47® concert series continues that tradition of musical discovery. \nHis set traces the tradition and spectrum of American song—what it has been\, can be\, and will become.
