Thompson as they present a sneak peek concert of songs and stories from the show, ahead of their 2025 summer run at Washington D.C.’s Signature Theatre. The Untitled Unauthorized Hunter S. Thompson Musical, directed by Tony Award Winner Christopher Ashley, is an anarchic and irreverent portrait of Woody Creek’s favorite renegade mad genius. Careening from the 1940s to 2005, the show follows Thompson as he invents Gonzo journalism, attempts to take down a corrupt president, and quests for equality for his fellow weirdos, outsiders and freaks.

About the Artist
Joe Iconis is a musical theater writer and performer. Iconis has been nominated for a Tony Award, four Drama Desk Awards, two Lucille Lortel Awards, two Outer Critics’ Circle Awards. He is the recipient of an Ed Kleban Award, a Jonathan Larson Award, and a Richard Rodgers Award.
His musical Be More Chill (with Joe Tracz) has played Broadway, London, and Tokyo and his new show The Untitled Unauthorized Hunter S. Thompson Musical (directed by Christopher Ashley) will play Washington D.C.’s Signature Theater this spring. Joe is the author of Love in Hate Nation (directed by John Simpkins; Two River Theater), Broadway Bounty Hunter (with Lance Rubin and Jason SweetTooth Williams; Greenwich House Theater Off-Broadway, Barrington Stage Company), Bloodsong of Love (Ars Nova, NAMT), Punk Rock Girl! (for Lively McCabe), The Black Suits (with Robert Maddock; Center Theater Group, Barrington Stage Company), ReWrite (Urban Stages, Goodspeed), Things To Ruin (2nd Stage Theater, The Zipper Factory) and Theaterworks USA’s The Plant That Ate Dirty Socks and We the People. His music appeared on season two of NBC’s Smash and he frequently performs with his concert act Joe Iconis & Family at 54 Below and the Laurie Beechman Theater.
