Since its formation in 1992, Bang on a Can All-Stars has stood at the forefront of contemporary music, creating performances that dissolve traditional distinctions between classical, jazz, rock, world, and experimental genres. The six-member amplified ensemble is internationally recognized for its dynamic performances, adventurous collaborations, and commitment to expanding the possibilities of concert music.
Over the past three decades, the All-Stars have worked closely with many of the most influential composers and performers of our time, including Steve Reich, Meredith Monk, Philip Glass, Terry Riley, and Ornette Coleman. Their celebrated projects range from landmark recordings of Brian Eno’s Music for Airports and Terry Riley’s In C to ambitious new works by David Lang, Julia Wolfe, and Michael Gordon.
David and Michael first met as students at Aspen Music Festival and School, coincidently when former student Philip Glass returned as a guest composer.
Honored as Musical America‘s Ensemble of the Year, the group continues to shape the future of contemporary music through performances that are virtuosic, boundary-crossing, and unmistakably their own.
