singer and band

Dive into a rich tapestry of jazz history and vibrant contemporary expression with the Julia Keefe Indigenous Jazz Ensemble. This distinguished ensemble, composed of premier Native and Indigenous jazz musicians from various corners of North America, celebrates the legacy and ongoing contributions of Indigenous artists to jazz. The band’s repertoire spans influential yet underrated jazz figures such as Mildred Bailey (Coeur d’Alene) and Jim Pepper (Kaw/Mvskoke), while also spotlighting works by modern Indigenous composers who draw inspiration from their ancestral musical traditions.

Under the leadership of the esteemed Nez Perce vocalist, Julia Keefe, the Indigenous Jazz Ensemble not only performs but educates and inspires. Their concerts are a deep exploration of jazz as an “uniquely American” art form, enriched by the diverse cultural backgrounds of its members. Each performance is crafted to not only entertain but to provoke thought and broaden understanding of the Indigenous influences that are woven into the fabric of American music history.

Since their debut in 2022, the band has rapidly gained recognition for their compelling performances that delve into the narratives of Indigenous musicians who have shaped jazz across generations. The ensemble features a ‘who’s who’ of today’s Indigenous jazz scene, each bringing their unique flair and deep respect for their cultural heritage. Audiences are treated to a blend of storytelling, exceptional musicianship, and a shared celebration of jazz’s multicultural roots.
