Step Afrika! brings the art form of stepping to the Wheeler Opera House in Aspen through a performance shaped by rhythm, movement, and cultural exchange. Founded in 1994 by C. Brian Williams, the Company is recognized as the world’s leading authority on stepping and has toured more than 60 countries.
Blending the percussive dance traditions of historically African American fraternities and sororities with traditional African dances combining precision, agility, traditional African dance, contemporary contemporary dance and art forms. Songs, storytelling, humor, and audience participation expand the experience beyond dance, while technique and agility drive its distinctive physical vocabulary.
Step Afrika! also advances stepping as an educational tool, emphasizing teamwork, academic achievement, and cross-cultural understanding. The Company has received Mayor’s Arts Awards for arts education, innovation, and artistic excellence, and it was the first dance company inducted into the National Association of Campus Activities Hall of Fame.
