Wheeler Presents Julia Keefe Indigenous Jazz Ensemble
A Groundbreaking Celebration of Indigenous Voices in Jazz
The Wheeler Opera House is proud to present the Julia Keefe Indigenous Jazz Ensemble on Saturday, October 11 at 7:30 PM. This electrifying performance brings together some of the most dynamic Native and Indigenous jazz musicians from across the Americas for an unforgettable evening of music, culture, and storytelling.
Led by acclaimed Nez Perce vocalist Julia Keefe, the ensemble pays tribute to under-recognized Indigenous jazz legends like Mildred Bailey and Jim Pepper, while also showcasing original works by contemporary Indigenous composers. The performance is a vibrant celebration of jazz as a uniquely American art form—reimagined through the lens of Indigenous experience and artistry.
The Julia Keefe Indigenous Jazz Ensemble (JKIBB) has quickly gained national attention since its 2022 premiere at the Washington Center for the Performing Arts. The group has headlined prestigious events including the Mary Lou Williams Jazz Festival at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., and continues to challenge and expand the narrative of jazz history.
“Hands down one of the most epic, poignant, moving, emotional concerts I’ve ever seen… unbelievable talent with charisma, passion, and purpose.”
— Pietra Mello-Pittman, Producer
This performance is more than a concert—it’s a cultural experience that honors the legacy and future of Indigenous jazz. Don’t miss this rare opportunity to witness sixteen Indigenous musicians on stage, united in sound, spirit, and purpose.
